Sayed Shinwari, MD, MPH

Dr. Sayed Alam Shinwari is the president and owner of Innovative Global Health (IGD) LLC. He is currently working at the Center for Global Health Engagement (CGHE) , an affiliation of the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences (USUHS). He serves as a senior academic advisor on global health engagement. Dr. Shinwari carries an appointment as an Assistant Professor with the Department of Preventive Medicine and Biostatistics (PMB) at USUHS. Dr. Shinwari speaks Pashto (native), Dari (native), Farsi, Urdu, and English.    
Dr. Shinwari earned his medical degree from Kabul Medical University.  Following graduation he worked as a general practitioner in Kabul and participated in several US sponsored medical training and observation programs in hospitals in Afghanistan, India, and the US.  Dr. Shinwari served as a public health coordinator for U.S. military medical/health projects in Afghanistan and served as a liaison between the Afghan National Army, the Afghan National Police, the Afghan public health sector, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), and U.S. Forces in Afghanistan.  
Dr. Shinwari immigrated to the US in 2007.  He was first employed as an Afghan languages and culture curriculum development specialist; he also earned a Master’s Degree in Public health with a concentration in Global Health management from George Washington University (GWU) in 2011. Dr. Shinwari served as a member of the Board of Directors (2008-2022) of a non for profit organization called Afghan Medical Professionals Association of America (AMPAA) where he advocated for the health needs of Afghan-Americans and seeks to serve the people of Afghanistan through continued scholarship and education and training programs designed to support the continued development of the Afghan health system. Dr. Shinwari also served as the president of AMPAA for two terms (2015-2018). He was a regular lecturer/instructor for Doctors for Afghanistan and currently serving as a guest commentator on Afghan health issues for various Afghan channels here in the U.S. as well as Afghanistan such as Voice of America for Afghanistan, BBC, and Afghan local TV and radio channels. Dr. Shinwari has published various manuscripts on the topics of global health through Journal of Military Medicine. When not working, Dr. Shinwari enjoys spending time with his wife and four children, writes fiction and poetry in both Pashto and Dari, and is an avid volleyball player.
